The Jazz Bar

Everybody loves this place!

What makes this really cool basement bar so universally appealing is its unique, high-quality mix of good music, a stylish but non-trendy environment, great service, and an ever-changing creative buzz.

Lots going on - we stage three gigs a day, seven nights a week, plus a Saturday afternoon jazz Trio session, that's 22 gigs every week!

TWO AWARDS THIS YEAR!

THE JAZZ BAR was voted (public vote) Scotland's 'JAZZ VENUE OF THE YEAR' at the Scottish Jazz Awards, Glasgow Jazz Festival, June 2009.

And in October 09 it was judged Scotland's 'MUSIC PUB OF THE YEAR' at the massive Scottish Licensed Trade News award dinner in Glasgow's 5-star Hilton Hotel.
Must be doing something right ...!

As for the ever-changing schedule of live music, there's lots of jazz, of course - but much more too. We present Jazz, Funk, Soul, HipHop, Acoustic, Singers, Jam Sessions, Big Band, New Bands Showcases, DJs, Party Nights ... all kinds of good stuff.

THREE TIME ZONES to enjoy our vibe:

TEATIME ACOUSTIC (6-8.30pm Tue-Sat)
After-Work ambience with
- Live bands, 'unplugged' acoustic sessions, CHESS SETS always available
- Free WiFi in the bar
- No door charge, please make a donation for the players!

EARLY GIG (8.30-11.30pm, Every Night)
- The best of jazz and other excellent music, local and touring bands. There's a small door charge to pay the musicians. (Student/Conc door discounts every night)

LATE N' LIVE (11.30-3am, Every Night)
- A mix of good music, mostly funky/electric, and supported by a bit of DJ action. There's a small door charge (just £2/£1 Sun-Thu, £5/£3 Fri/Sat) which goes to the musicians.

CHILDREN
Unfortunately the terms of our Council Licence state that we are not allowed to admit under-14s at any time, and under-18s are not admitted after 8pm (not our decision!). But you can bring 'young adults' (14-17) in to the Saturday afternoon Jazz trio gigs, 3-6pm, or the 'Teatime Acoustic' sessions, up to 8pm. Where else can kids experience the vital stimulus of excellent live music?

OPENING HOURS
We open Mon-Fri at 5pm, Sat 2.30pm, Sun 7.30pm
We close at 3am every night (or is that 'morning'?)
- Except in August, for the month-long Festival period, when we have a 2-hour extension. Yep, bar to 5am!

DISABLED ACCESS
It is our regret that due to the nature of the premises, the basement of an old (c1880) building, access is by two short flights of stairs down, and there is no space to build any form of disabled access. Also there's no disabled toilet. We sincerely apologise for this, but there's absolutely nothing we can do about it, there's just no extra space to create the facilities. There may be a prospect of some future expansion, and when that happens we'll certainly create full access and facilities.
It would be possible to carry a wheelchair with occupant down/up the stairs. Edinburgh City Council Fire Regulations state that for this to be permissable, wheelchair users will have to be accompanied by able assistants who will remain with them at all times, and be prepared to carry the chair plus occupant down and back up the stairs.
