The tuesday tea-time regular blues singer performs a special Festival Friday before he goes on to perform his repeatedly sold-out Fringe Festival shows! Paul Harrison (keys) and Stu Brown (drums) mix glitchy electronica, break beats and noisy soundscapes, as their duo, Herschel 36’s music organically evolves into a sonic mass of heaving atonal harmonies and jazz rhythms. Ex Trio VD and Acoustic Ladyland guitarist, Chris Sharkey “is at the cutting-edge of contemporary improv-fusion guitar technique, colliding headlong free-jazz phrasing with roaring thrash metal riffs and ghostly electronics” (John Fordham,The Guardian).

The Jazz Bar is home to one of the strongest communities of funk musicians in the UK. All the late night resident bands are here tonight in one epic MASHUP: The Sunday Sinners, Glamour and the Baybes, 101st Airbourne, Swampfog and Future Heroes. A celebratory night including featured vocalists, band mashups and a jumbo horn section!

‘Hard Bop’ swinging arrangements by Keith Edwards (sax), Robert Pettigrew (piano), Ed Kelly (bass) and Aldo Morrow (drums). Their sets include original compositions, some rarely heard jazz tunes, and pieces by British Jazz legends Tubby Hayes, and Scots trumpet legend Jimmy Deuchar.

The bassist’s extraordinary group with Martin Speake (saxophones), and Hans Koller (trombone), play nearly all of Thelonious Monk’s compositions over two days. Immerse yourself in Monk!

The dazzling young pianist is perhaps the musician most likely to keep the classic traditions of jazz alive on the Scottish jazz scene. He just loves tunes, and even in his early 20s he’s got an extensive knowledge of standards, to go with his great harmonic and improvisational skills. Here he is with a top young band featuring Helena Kay and Will Arnold-Foster.

Tuesday 18th

7pm – 8.30pm, £12.50   (EJBF) BRIAN KELLOCK & LIANNE CARROLL

The pianist invites another great free spirit from the English jazz scene, to join him in re-casting a host of songs from Tin Pan Alley to classic jazz songs to soul and contemporary pop. Spontaneity and wit infuse Kellock’s music and Carroll’s singing too. They love the musical sparring and powerful emotional undercurrents that underpin the wonderful on-stage conversation of a great jazz duo.

9.30pm – 11pm, £12   (EJBF) BRIAN KEDDIE QUINTET PLAYS TADD DAMERON

Saxophonist, Dameron, seamlessly brought order to bebop in the 1940s and wrote and arranged one of the great pads in jazz history. Enigmatic, original music that should be better known, and in the year of his centenary, trombonist, Brian Keddie gets together with altoist, Geoff Simkins, Brian Kellock and Kenny Ellis to shine a light on one of the creative geniuses of jazz.

From Johnson City Tennessee, she’s described as a Southern Gothic, alt-country blues singer-songwriter. Festival audiences were knocked out by her power and immediacy last year and its great to have her back; original singer/songwriting rooted in rhythm and blues and gospel and country and all things Southern USA.

Expect a mixture of tunes: traditional, original and cover versions (with more than a dash of Scouse!) from well-known singer/songwriter Henry Ibbs.

Two adventurous virtuoso instrumentalists bring together a love of musical risk, a passion for jazz old and new and a mutual respect and understanding spanning two decades. They’ve never performed an entire concert as a duo before. In the first half, with a blank canvas who knows where the musical journey will go. In the second half, Brian’s Trio join for a straight ahead swinging set.

Freddie King, international jazz singer, will be appearing at the Jazz Bar with his great quintet.   Catch them before he heads back to Australia, South Korea, Malaysia, and Thailand again where he will be headlining, performing, and teaching.   On sale will be his new live album, recorded in Seoul, South Korea, and also its predecessor “Diggin’ Deep”.

The 18 year old saxophonist is a young musician of exceptional promise. Intelligent, searching playing with a beautiful sound, and a penchant for melody as well as improvisation.

This award-winning, touring Edinburgh 6-piece, fronted by singer Felipe Schrieberg, melds gritty, old-school Rhythm and Blues, influenced by the Chicago sound of Chess records, with the earthy, droning grooves of Deep South Mississippi, delivering raucous, high-energy performances with thick guitar riffs, frenzied harmonica solos and driving rhythms.

Award winning vocalist Ali Affleck and the Gin Mill Genies specialise in every provoking every emotion from the sweet sentimental to the downright dark and sinister, tonight’s performance will debut songs from upcoming projects ‘The Preaching Divas and the Divine Divas’ –  thoroughly researched shows highlighting the strong and passionate first ladies of Blues and very early ‘jazz’, encompassing energising gospel, swing and darker sultry blues.

8pm – 10pm, £10   (EJBF) GORDON McNEIL: 7th AVENUE SOUTH

Saxophonist, McNeil recreates the vibe of New York’s legendary 7th Avenue South jazz club, where musicians like Steps Ahead, Mike Stern, Bob Berg, Jaco Pastorius and Chick Corea fused the spirit of jazz, with the energy of funk and rock.

This impressive 5 piece of multi-instrumentalists melds instrumental Jazz Fusion and fresh Funk with Hip-Hop and World Music inflections.
