The Groove Merchants:1950-60’s Hard Bop Golden Age

20:30 – 22:30, £12 ADV or on the door Tickets Here!

A celebration of the joyful compositions and arrangements of Tadd Dameron, Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis, The Jazz Messengers and more.

Following the birth and progression of Bebop in the 40s and 50s – the rhythms and sounds of Black gospel music began to resonate in a new style known in the mid-1950s as hard bop. This change was partly in response to the popularity of cool jazz. Hard bop implies a return to some of the elements of the 1940s bebop style, which were configured using new concepts. In hard bop, counterpoint melodies or harmonized lines replaced the unison stylistic melodies of bebop, and medium tempos were favored over the faster tempos of bebop.

The Groove Merchants will play compositions and arrangements of Tadd Dameron, Freddie Hubbard, Miles Davis, The Jazz Messengers and more – in a tribute to one of the most joyful and progressive eras in jazz.

In his latest project, Helbock has recruited the versatile electric bassist and cellist Julia Hofer from Vienna as his duo partner. Hofer has primarily made a name for herself in the pop world so far, whether through tours with the No Angels or appearances on German TV shows. In addition to her impressive online following on YouTube, where her videos engage millions of bass fans, she is now dedicating herself more intensively to jazz.

In September 2025, the duo released a new album on the internationally renowned label ACT Music. The album promises a fascinating mix of calm, dreamy original compositions and groovy jazz pieces that bear the duo’s unmistakable style.

The album has garnered praise from the press and was included in „TheTimes“ (UK) best jazzalbums of 2025.
