Building on the success of a solo EP released in early 2021, Franco-American jazz pianist Tom Sochas, previously known for his work with London staple Phoenician Blinds, is back at The Jazz Bar this time with his trio, playing music from his soon to be released debut album The Sorcerer (on Khumbu Records). The album, set to be released in April 2022 introduces Tom’s new combo with Greek bassist Thodoris Ziarkas and British drummer Olly Sarkar. Expect a trio sound that blends a love for hard hitting post-bop and a passion for western classical repertoire.

Cera Impala, Edinburgh’s esteemed banjo babe, brings roots, folk, old-time jazz, gospel, rag, and original indie-love to The Jazz Bar as she hosts a one-of-a-kind showcase featuring talent from her eclectic community of artists. The Half Moon Medicine show(case) – the cure for what ails you!

Mezcla are a Glasgow based jazz-fusion ensemble attracting attention for their soulful blend of eclectic jazz and infectious grooves. Led by David Bowden (BBC Young Scottish Jazz Musician of the Year 2017), the line-up features some of the best of Glasgow’s vibrant young jazz scene. The name means ‘mixture’ and the band fuse a broad range of influences from jazz, funk, rock and world music into one voice. The Mezcla sound is distinguished by uplifting melodies, shimmering textures, and visceral improvisation.

Each week a top-drawer piano trio, led by bassist Ed Kelly, is joined by a special guest spot. Saxophonists, guitarists, trumpeters and singers showcase their talents in a broad range of jazz styles. From swing, blues, bossa, trad and modern, this is a variable early evening session of intimate and enjoyable jazz. This week’s spotlight: Dick Lee (sax and bass clarinet)

The first Sunday of the month celebrates the very best in vocals! Hosted by the “sweetheart of the Scottish jazz scene”, Georgia Cécile, and her stellar quartet. The evening pays homage to her greatest influences: Nancy Wilson, Abbey Lincoln, Sarah Vaughan and more. Voted ‘Best Vocalist’ at the 2019 Scottish Jazz Awards and tipped as ‘One to Watch’ by Jamie Cullum (Jazzwise), Cécile is fast becoming one of the UK’s most exciting young vocalists and songwriters.

Neo-soul, trip-hop grooves and re-edited classics are delivered to your ears, feet and hips by this vocals-fronted band with a rhythm section to die for. FOUR trumpets, FOUR trombones, FIVE saxes and FOUR rhythm! It’s a variable line-up of top-class pro players, who travel in from around Scotland to participate in this outstanding gig. Nowhere else can you hear this standard of regular Big Band playing. Led by saxophonist Keith Edwards, the personnel changes weekly, as does their selection of fantastic arrangements.

Fronted by the high-energy vocals of Kat Brooks, The Fresh Squeeze mix up funk classics and up-tempo R&B ranging from the 70s to the present day. With Alex James (guitar) and Craig Stoddart (sax) out at the front, backed up by a solid rhythm section made up of Mochi Robinson (bass), Ranald Mackey (keys) and Carter Skillicorn (drums), there’s no doubt you won’t be spending the evening sat in your seat.

A new group gathered by keyboardist and composer Paul Harrison to play his own music, which is adventurous, melodic, beguiling and dangerous all at once. From atmospheric and searching to infectious, urban groove driven, the mood can change at the drop of a hat. Featuring leading talents from Scotland’s scene – saxophonists Adam Jackson and Michael Butcher, bassist Brodie Jarvie and drummer Doug Hough.

Mixing a live latin rhythm section, psychadelic guitar solos and mesmerizing Peruvian melodies, the 7-piece Los Chichanos perform “chicha” music or Jungle Cumbria. From Carols to popular classics and all with the stylings and interactions of an acoustic jazz ensemble at its core, Merry Matt Gough’s Christmas arrangements tap into the musical veins of swing, funk, ska and rhythm and blues. This jolly jazz octet featuring vocalist, Emilie Boyd is set to get those sleigh bells swinging and to spread some festive cheer.

A new project showing a departure from Ali’s usual repertoire with a program of ambitious works by Nina Simone. Joining Ali are some of the countries from musicians – Paul Harrison on piano, Stu brown on drums, colin steele, trumpet and Roy Percy on double bass. The deeply passionate, challenging and highly emotional songs from the Nina Simone canon bring out the best in Ali’s rich and highly emotive vocal and with such a powerhouse band backing her, this will be a powerful and lively evening.

Louise Dodds returns to The Jazz Bar with a stellar band featuring Elchin Shirinov (piano), Andrew Robb (double bass), Michael Butcher (tenor sax) and Alyn Cosker (drums). Fresh from their Edinburgh Jazz Festival gig, the band will be performing some of Louise’s original songs from her upcoming new album, alongside standards and songs by artists who have inspired her.
“Her delivery is lightsome and clear, with a background warmth of tone that came out in Blossom in Indigo, with its upbeat sense of release underpinned by the nicely travelling band. Elsewhere there was energetic scatting in the self-questioning Nowhere to Hide and a winsome open-heartedness to Every Hue.” – (The Scotsman)
