Lieko Quintet – April 28th

Lieko Quintet

Treading a path somewhere between soul music and folk song, Lieko Quintet are developing a new-world sound that turns contemporary jazz on its head. Deep grooves and a brassy, dirty-funk sound anchored by melody and freely improvised, this is brain-melting blend that moves from dripping fusion beats to swirling soundscapes.

Lieko’s original compositions derive from versatile pianist Alex Hill, who is involved in a huge number of projects from contemporary jazz to New Orleans speakeasy jives, to funk, hip-hop and afrobeat. Hill has a hand in AGBEKO, The Easy Rollers, Marouli, The Foo Birds, Kara and more, but Lieko Quintet is the point where all of his influences combine. Digging up standards from Miles Davis and Thelonious Monk with intriguingly fresh arrangements, Lieko manage to breathe new life into much-covered tunes with unusual meter grooves providing the basis for intense solos. The original compositions are earthy and powerful, inventively arranged to focus around melody while holding fast to a raw and ragged sound.

Check out Lieko’s recordings on Soundcloud or download for keeps via Bandcamp.

Bandcamp are waiving their 15% cut for the first Friday of each month through to July, meaning that 100% of any purchases made on May 1st, June 5th, or July 3rd will go to the artists, from midnight to midnight (PDT).

DONATE

You can continue to support us and the professional musicians who are struggling right now, by donating what you might usually spend on an entry fee or a drink, or any other amount that you wish. Professional musicians and all hospitality/event staff are facing an incredibly difficult time, having seen months of steady work disappear over-night. Any donations would be extremely appreciated to help us to continue to pay our staff through our closure and support our local event staff community in any way that we can.
