The Jazz Bar’s all-inclusive jam session is back! On the first Thursday of every month, Jazz Bar locals Toni McVey (drums), Luke Cunningham (keys), Amy Reader (voc), Stephen Jack (bass), and Harry Higgs (guitar), are here to welcome and guide any and all musicians, genres and abilities into the Edinburgh music scene for an evening of funky tunes and the opportunity to meet artists of all shapes and sizes!

Kimberley Tessa

Vocalist and saxophonist Kimberley Tessa has been making waves across the Scottish jazz scene. Awarded ‘Rising Star’ at the 2023 Scottish Jazz Awards, she performs throughout Scotland playing Jazz sets, original music, and with the vocal trio “The Vintage Girls”. She will be performing alongside guitarist Sean Bissett for a set of Jazz infused RnB originals and some classic jazz numbers. Sean Bissett has spent the last 10 years working as a session guitarist in Scotland. An early found interest in improvised music has led him on a near 20-year journey studying the great musicians Charlie Parker, Oscar Peterson, Pat Metheny, and John Scofield, to name a few.

Chris Parrish / Lorenzo Cortés quartet

A exciting debut for American pianist Chris Parrish and a very welcome return for Lorenzo … expect a sizzling hot as hell swinging night of wild 1930s era-esque jazz. Chris Parrish began playing the piano at a young age and demonstrated a strong interest in self-learning and chose to teach himself, rather than taking formal lessons. Today, Chris is a proudly self-taught musician, capable of playing a wide range of styles with equal zeal and proficiency. Lorenzo Cortes is a vivacious swing guitarist in the style of Charlie Christian, and since moving to France has made a solid name for himself as a pivotal player on the vibrant Paris jazz scene. These two are ‘ones to watch’ on the early jazz scene

LOS CHICHANOS

The band behind Edinburgh’s legendary late night tropical Latin fiestas, Los Chichanos formed to heat up audiences across the UK with a pumping guitar-driven tropical Peruvian music movement known as “chicha”. Born in ‘60s Peru, the genre has experienced a worldwide boom in recent years amongst lovers of tropical parties, Latin music and late night dance hangouts and it’s clear why Los Chichanos go down so well on stage – full-throttled Latin percussion, iconic surf electric guitar-driven songs, jungle sounds, vintage Farfisa organ, dark psychedelia and all the raucous rhythms of live cumbia & salsa you could ever dance to!

Līga Kupča Quartet

Liga obtained a Masters in Jazz Performance at the prestigious Jāzeps Vītols Latvian Academy of Music, and is now a rising star on the Scottish jazz scene. Liga is competently backed by a talented set of local musicians on piano, double bass and drums.

Neo-soul, hip-hop grooves and throwback funk classics! This vocal lead band is guaranteed to get your hips moving. Inspired by new and old artists from Steely Dan to Jordan Rakei, Dank Mango will cook up a funk-filled night with a wide range of musical styles to keep you on your toes. Led by vocal and guitar talent Ed Denman, Groovy bass by Lucas Gilchrist, Tight drums from Jack O’Rourke and soulful keys by Will Anderson.

Monsterosa

Monsterosa is a new band bringing vocalist Rebecca Hollweg and bassist Andy Hamill from London together with Scottish stalwarts Graeme Wilson (woodwinds) Ross Milligan (guitar) and Tom Gordon (drums).The group emerged from a lockdown project to write new songs and instrumentals for five jazz musicians based on Italo
Calvino’s Marcovaldo collection, taking in the band’s wider love for soul, folk, and latin music. “The band are terrific…the whole ensemble play with a deftness and sensitivity… a joy to listen to” (London Jazz News)

KING LOUIE AND THE PRIMAS

Before Louis Prima, Vegas was a seedy gambling town known mostly for its mafia connections. After his show revolutionised the citys entertainment it became the number one showbiz destination. Frank, Sammy, Marilyn, Cary, Dean, they all came to see Louis Prima, along with the crowds who queued round the block till six in the morning. In this tribute, you’ll hear all the great songs and all the fun and gags and nonsense as well. Trombonist and singer Dave Batchelor leads a specially assembled all-star band in a loving recreation of the Louis Prima Vegas Show.

Bodega Latina Club Night

Ali Affleck’s Speakeasy

Fronted by Ali Affleck- who was awarded the prestigious ‘Best Jazz Vocalist 2014/15’ by the Scottish Jazz Federation, Speakeasy Swing have a fondness for early Hot Jazz and the upbeat ‘Tin Pan Alley’ movement. Working the not so standard tunes of old in with the Great American Songbook, the Speakeasy Swing; repertoire is energetic and lively – with some sassy and seductive numbers thrown into the mix just for fun .

Eloi (Ee – loy), are an Edinburgh based 7-piece future-jazz group. Alongside numerous sold-out headline Edinburgh gigs, they have supported bands such as Surprise Chef at Glasgow’s Broadcast, alongside local Scottish groups including Grace and the Flatboys, Dinosaur 93 and Nani. In 2022, they secured a slot at Edinburgh’s Hidden Door Festival through the Edinburgh-based community radio station EHFM, and also hold a monthly show on the station called Eloi Selects. Inspired by the likes of Nubiyan Twist, Ezra Collective and Hiatus Kaiyote, their debut EP ‘Maya’ was released in 2022

FOUR trumpets, FOUR trombones, FIVE saxes and FOUR rhythm! It’s a variable line-up of top-class pro players, who travel in from around Scotland to participate in this outstanding gig. Nowhere else can you hear this standard of regular Big Band playing. Led by saxophonist Keith Edwards, the personnel changes weekly, as does their selection of fantastic arrangements.
