The Castle Terrace Sessions, is a project that revolves around groove based, funk and soul music. Founded by Edinburgh bass player Gregor Wilson, this fresh initiative of 7 musicians promises an exceptional musical journey by blending music both classic and modern. Bring your little ones to our Interactive Live Jazz Show! This isn’t just music—it’s a full-blown adventure into the world of early jazz, designed especially for younger audiences. It takes them right into the heart of the band, experiencing the magic of live acoustic instruments through music, dancing, fun, and play!

And parents, we’ve got you covered too! With our fully licensed bar, you can sip on your favourite cocktail, enjoy a cold beer, or unwind with a glass of wine while the kids groove to the tunes. And if you are doing Dry January- why not give our Famous Fiery Ginger Beer a try, we also have an impressive non-alcoholic beer selection.

But that’s not all—there’s a 30-minute disco after the show for anyone still needing to party and burn off even more energy!

The show starts at 3pm and consists of two 30min sets with a 20min break in between. 30min of disco to follow. Please arrive early- doors open at 2.30pm.

The Jacob Bavetta Quartet

Having grown up in Enfield, Guitarist Jacob Bavetta was taught by some of London finest Jazz musicians at programs like Tomorrow’s Warriors and NYJO. Living in both Edinburgh and Milan has given him the opportunity to play with a wide range of top musicians at various sessions.

This Quartet brings together some of Scotlands’ finest young jazz musicians playing a range of Jacob’s originals as well as some classic standards reimagined.

It features Edinburgh based Pianist Luke Mitchell, as well as Nemo Ganguli on drums and Christopher Quinn on Bass.

Tonight sees the launch of vocalist and songwriter Louise Dodds’ new album ‘All I Know’. To celebrate the launch, Louise will be performing the album in full with an incredible band featuring Tom Gibbs (piano), David Bowden (double bass), Chun-Wei Kang (drums) and Graeme Stephen (guitar).

Signed copies of the album, which is being released on Norwegian contemporary jazz label AMP Music & Records, will be available to purchase on the night.

Tonight’s concert follows on from Louise’s sold out performance at last year’s Edinburgh Jazz and Blues Festival as well as her nominations for Best Vocalist at the Scottish Jazz Awards.

J. Emmanuel is a Soul/Blues artist from Nigeria, currently residing in the beautiful city of Edinburgh. His rich tone of voice and smooth delivery gives his music a unique soulful vibe and conscious feel. At an early age, Emmanuel sang in the choir and developed a deep love and passion for music. Growing up, he was heavily inspired by Gospel, Soul, and Blues.
A chance encounter at work would see him transition from a music fanatic to singing, in nearly every venue in the Edinburgh. In 2017 he was one of the founding members of Bourbon Street 5 which went on to support artists like Grammy nominated Blues Guitarist Eric Gales, Grammy Nominated Blues Singer Sugar Ray Rayford, Euro Blues Award Nominated Guitarist Erja Lyytinen. Now, as a solo artist, he is on a journey to inspire others through his music; with a debut EP release in 2023. Not to be missed!

Glasgow-based artist, poet and activist Diljeet Kaur Bhachu performs music from her debut album Double Lives, a richly textured journey through hypnotic layers of flute, electronics, poetry and Hindustani vocals. The songs focus on ideas of ‘selves’ – past selves, fragmented selves, whole selves, and possible alternative selves, reflecting on her relationship with herself, with her ancestry and heritage, and her experiences growing up in the Indian diaspora.

With a featured artist performing an hour of their set followed by an open blues jam. This is the night to see blues in the jazz bar every month. Mighty Mighty

Led by the magnetic Amy Reader, this genre-bending band blends old-school funk with smooth hip-hop beats to create a sound that’s impossible to resist. With a rhythm section that makes your feet move and lyrics that hit deep, their performances are a late-night celebration of everything funky and fresh.

Led by talented jazz vocalist and guitarist Dave Toule, his trio features the extraordinary talents of Paul Harrison on piano and Douglas Whates on upright bass. Drawing inspiration from Nat King Cole’s early trios and a wealth of piano/guitar trios of the 40s, 50s and beyond, the group’s driving rhythms, hard swing and charismatic performances pay tribute to well known classics of the American Songbook and hidden gems alike; all expertly delivered with a fresh new sound and an undeniably contagious groove.

Boptimism

Boptimism is a quintet, celebrating the classic bop and hardbop era bands of Cannonball Adderley, Hank Mobley, Art Blakey’s Jazz Messengers, Tubby Hayes and others, with an eclectic set of 2-horn arrangements by jazz composers like Duke Pearson, Cedar Walton, George Coleman, Harold Mabern and Scotland’s own hardbop legend, trumpeter Jimmy Deuchar.Boptimism’s front line is local saxist Keith Edwards and Donald Corbett, who in addition to playing trumpet & flugelhorn, contributes cracking original compositions, which are an important ingredient of the band’s live sets and the focus of its debut album: ‘Boptimism plays the Donald Corbett Songbook’. Built upon a powerhouse rhythm section of Campbell Normand (piano), Ed Kelly (bass) and Alastair Morrow (drums), Boptimism has a regular monthly slot at the Jazz Bar where they aim to conjure up the jazz vibe of the late 50’s and 60’s with a mix of swinging hard-bop, burners, ballads, jazz waltzes and latin grooves.

Dank Mango

Neo-soul, hip-hop grooves and throwback funk classics! This vocal lead band is guaranteed to get your hips moving. Inspired by new and old artists from Steely Dan to Jordan Rakei, Dank Mango will cook up a funk-filled night with a wide range of musical styles to keep you on your toes. Led by vocal and guitar talent Ed Denman, Groovy bass by Lucas Gilchrist, Tight drums from Jack O’Rourke and soulful keys by Will Anderson.

Open Rehearsal 8-9pm, full gig from 9.15-10.45pm

FOUR trumpets, FOUR trombones, FIVE saxes and FOUR rhythm! It’s a variable line-up of top-class pro players, who travel in from around Scotland to participate in this outstanding gig. Nowhere else can you hear this standard of regular Big Band playing. Led by saxophonist Keith Edwards, the personnel changes weekly, as does their selection of fantastic arrangements.
