Each week a top-drawer piano trio, led by bassist Ed Kelly, is joined by a special guest spot. Saxophonists, guitarists, trumpeters and singers showcase their talents in a broad range of jazz styles. From swing, blues, bossa, trad and modern, this is a variable early-evening session of intimate and enjoyable jazz.

Every Saturday, a different hand-picked selection of five excellent jazz players meets on stage for the first time (hence the name) – to play with no rehearsal, and no set list! Always a fresh line-up.

A special night from the Chakalaka crew!The duo of DJ Moneyshot and Rackabeat have been delighting dance floors and lighting up radio airwaves since forming The Allergies and releasing their debut album in 2016. Joining them on stage, as always, is LA rap legend, Andy Cooper. The mighty pipes of soul sensation, Marietta Smith. And the blazing horns of sax supremo, James Morton. Plus the Chakalaka DJs!

The first Sunday of the month sees singer Anna Vanosi host an evening filled with Italian tunes, jazz and early blues standards. “Drawing from the rich canon of Italian popular song as well as the American tradition, Anna Vanosi lives in the character of every song she sings, continuously drawing imagination, passion and energy from the depths of her soul.” 4 star review on broadway baby, “enchanting: A real life Italian diva”.

The Jazz Bar’s all-inclusive jam session is back! On the first Thursday of every month, Jazz Bar locals Toni McVey (drums), Luke Cunningham (keys), Amy Reader (voc), Stephen Jack (bass), and Harry Higgs (guitar), are here to welcome and guide any and all musicians, genres and abilities into the Edinburgh music scene for an evening of funky tunes and the opportunity to meet artists of all shapes and sizes!

Nimbus Sextet are on a full UK tour debuting new songs from their upcoming third album release. Performing in the UK and Europe’s top jazz venues including Ronnie Scott’s and New Morning (Paris), and with two universally acclaimed albums on the iconic Acid Jazz Records, the band have firmly established themselves as one of the most innovative groups in the new wave of UK jazz and an increasingly major voice in the vibrant European jazz scene. The Nimbus sound comes courtesy of bandleader and primary composer Joe Nichols (keys/piano, harmonica), and features Euan Allardice (trumpet), Simon Herberholz (saxophone), Honza Kourimsky (guitar), Stephen Jack (bass) and Jack O’Rourke (drums) .

With repertoire drawn from their favourite moments in Jazz composition, the Intercostal Quartet have honed their vital connective skills, knitting their tendonous basis in jazz tradition with a vibrant flexibility. Comprised of Drumkit (Greg Irons), Acoustic Bass (Elie Afif), Piano (Chris Lyons) & Trombone (Chris Greive) their repertoire ranges from the simplicity of works like ‘Skating In Central Park’ (John Lewis) and ‘Triste’ (Antônio Carlos Jobim) through to the musical puzzles of ‘Conception’ (George Shearing) and ‘Time Remembered’ (Bill Evans). Adding tunes from Monk, Shorter & Silver, the Intercostal Quartet showcases the standard, a sinewy rhythmic drive with space for breath and the joys of playing.

Stephen Henderson’s Modern Vikings brings together five of Scotland’s brightest, most creative jazz talents. Up and coming singer Becca Sloan has garnered increasing attention for her distinctive, soulful voice. Tonight she is accompanied by a band of talented contemporaries.

A rising star of the Norwegian jazz scene known for her beautiful, lush melodies, playful compositions and the intricate and imaginative interplay with her young band. The young double bass player from Glasgow takes influences from contemporary jazz greats such as Larry Grenadier, Aaron Parks and Shai Maestro as well as classical and Scottish folk music. His quartet features some of the rising stars on the Scottish scene and together they create intricate yet lyrical melodies and thoughtful improvisations. He is joined by a talented band of Alan Benzie (piano), Matt Carmichael (saxophone) and Greg Irons (drums).

Mixing a live latin rhythm section, psychadelic guitar solos and mesmerizing Peruvian melodies, the 7-piece Los Chichanos perform “chicha” music or Jungle Cumbia. This style of South American music was written to make bodies move and minds travel. Jungle sounds, guitar-driven songs, vintage organ leads and hot Latin percussion.

The New Tune Jacks is a quartet over a decade in the making. The band hails from Aurora, Illinois just forty miles west of Chicago-the city of broad shoulders and the birthplace of “hot jazz”. After playing together for years, life sent each member of the group to different parts of the world with Hans Luchs (guitar) living in Brooklyn, Andrew Vogt (bass) and Eric Brink (sax) living in Chicago, and Max Popp (drums) living in Scotland. They are reunited tonight to keep your feet moving and your soul satiated with a live show bringing the excitement and vibe of Chicago to the Jazz Bar. You don’t wnat to miss this!

Kristina Fransson was the standout musician from the Europe Jazz Workshop in 2022 and has won accolades and awards from Oslo Jazz Festival. Now the trumpeter returns to collaborate with guitarist Graeme Stephen and his handpicked band of Martin Kershaw (saxophone), Elie Affif (bass) and Stephen Henderson (drums). Expect peerless improvisations from these fearless musicians.
