The first performance of a new ambitious project led by Ali Affleck . Billie 99 seeks to perform (almost!) the entire recorded repertoire of Billie holiday.
We start tonight in 1933 with Billie in Harlem and her first recordings with Benny Goodman and then we start into the start of her new alliance with Teddy Wilson.

Kat Brooks has built a reputation across Scotland as a high energy, soulful front woman, hosting late-night sessions across Edinburgh since 2018 and leading her 40-piece Gospel choir. Tonight, she brings a brand-new octet to the Jazz Bar, delivering gospel-influenced soul and blues through original songs which mix honest story-telling with grit and heart. Complemented by three fierce singers providing soaring harmonies, Lisa Lathwell, Tyla Winter and Laetitia Butler, and a rhythm section made from Edinburgh’s finest up and coming musicians. Formed in Edinburgh at the tail end of 2018 Nouvelle Jukebox are a truly swingin’ four piece that have been playing regular packed out shows in and around Scotland’s capital city. Each week a top-drawer piano trio, led by bassist Ed Kelly, is joined by a special guest spot. Saxophonists, guitarists, trumpeters and singers showcase their talents in a broad range of jazz styles. From swing, blues, bossa, trad and modern, this is a variable early-evening session of intimate and enjoyable jazz.

Held on the last Sunday of each month, award-winning vocalist Ali Affleck brings a fiery New Orleans passion with heavy doses of old-time pop and deep digs into the rarest of trad and blues. Hot roots, blues, prohibition-era jazz, and cheeky Creole tunes from the finest swing bands around. Each month sees both new friends and old; special guests and long-time favourites of the swing dance community – the perfect end to the month

Neo-soul, trip-hop grooves and re-edited classics are delivered to your ears, feet and hips by this vocals-fronted band with a rhythm section to die for. Guaranteed to keep your feet moving and your jaw dropped. Featuring hot vocals from Fiona Lynch, funky guitar from Aki Remally, and dope grooves from Jim Drummond (drums) and Dougie Coulter (bass).

FOUR trumpets, FOUR trombones, FIVE saxes and FOUR rhythm! It’s a variable line-up of top-class pro players, who travel in from around Scotland to participate in this outstanding gig. Nowhere else can you hear this standard of regular Big Band playing. Led by saxophonist Keith Edwards, the personnel changes weekly, as does their selection of fantastic arrangements

Atlantic Road Trip is an international project combining prominent musical voices from Europe and America, exploring the evolution and fusion of traditional indigenous folk music from Scotland, Ireland and Slovakia, and their historical coalescence through the medium of contemporary jazz and improvised music. The project also draws upon intertwined musical paths of European folk traditions and their historical interplay with music from Africa, South America, and beyond.

A Hat, a Suit, and a Guitar. With a swing/jazz/acoustic style somewhere between Django Reinhardt and Richard Thompson. You’ll hear familiar songs in a way you’ve never imagined.

9.15pm-11.30pm £10/£8  KEITH HALDANE QUARTET

The highly inventive drummer, Keith Haldane, brings together a classic quartet for a night of jazz standards played tastefully with some of the best of Edinburgh’s players. Featuring Campbell Normand (piano), Gary Laidlaw (guitar) and Ed Kelly (bass).

12.15am-2.30am £5/£3   THURSDAY FUNK: FUTURE HEROES

Superbly creative guitarist Aki Remally (guitar/vocals) fronts this five-piece funk monster, playing tasty covers and heavy jams. Featuring Jonny White on saxophone, these guys will keep your feet moving all night long with the deep-funk rhythms of Toni McVey (drums), Tom Wilkinson (bass) and Luke Cunningham (keys) Occasional guests ensure a night of heavy funking for all. Cera Impala, Edinburgh’s esteemed banjo babe, brings roots, folk, old-time jazz, gospel, rag, and original indie-love to The Jazz Bar as she hosts a one-of-a-kind showcase featuring talent from her eclectic community of artists. The Half Moon Medicine show(case) – the cure for what ails you!

9.15pm-11.30pm £10/£8 BOPTIMISM

Classic ‘Hard Bop’ quintet featuring charts by Keith Edwards (sax) and Donald Corbett (trumpet/flugelhorn) with stellar rhythm section of Campbell Normand (piano), Ed Kelly (bass) and Keith Haldane (drums). Their sets include original compositions, gems from British Jazz legends Tubby Hayes and Dundee’s own Jimmy Deuchar, as well as hip US jazzers such as Duke Pearson, Harold Mabern and Cedar Walton.

12.15am-2.30am £8/£5   SAMBA SENE AND DIWAN

An exuberant fusion of funky mbalax/Afrobeat grooves, with undercurrents of ska,
rock and Senegalese soul; original songs with impassioned vocals, infectious guitar
licks and irresistible dance beats.
Led by charismatic Senegalese singer Samba Sene, Diwan is a diverse collection of musicians, who share a global outlook and love of West African rhythms. The current core line up is Akin Fatunmbi (guitar), Angus Rutherford (bass) and Mikey Cameron (drums)
